Mechanical assessment of energy wall in the long term

Abstract Embedded retaining walls equipped with ground heat exchangers is one kind of energy geostructures, harvesting the shallow for heating and cooling buildings. However, past investigations mainly focus on thermal assessment walls, but pay limited attention to mechanical wall behavior associated response. At present, there no standard preliminary code assessing long-term performance walls. In this study, a comprehensive literature review conducted summarize existing studies both conventional thermo-active ones, respectively. The identifies three most critical factors (i.e., horizontal movement, settlement, basement heave), while their permissible values can be referred design criteria in short-term field measurements. For elaborating application criteria, parametric study implemented evaluate stiff clay under various conditions, including influence solicitations, station temperature asymmetrical operation mode. vivid results show that thermal-induced movements due geothermal may cause unfavorable serviceability issues (e.g., cracks), are unlikely bring damages structural performance. identified evaluation influences provide some guidance behavior, particularly light measurements demonstration cases.
